Meet Melanie Broughton
The badge was part of my story. What came after changed the way I tell it.
After years spent standing beside people during some of the hardest moments of their lives, I never imagined I would one day have to find my own way through the darkness.
Today, I turn the experiences I carried from law enforcement into fiction—stories about the people behind the uniform, the things we carry quietly, and the strength it takes to keep going.
MY STORY
From the Badge to the Page
My story didn't begin with a book. It began with a badge.
“I spent years helping people survive the worst days of their lives. I never imagined one day I'd have to save my own.”
For nearly two decades, I served in law enforcement during a time when women were still fighting to find their place—and their voice—in the profession. I experienced the best and worst of people, witnessed moments I will never forget, and learned that sometimes the hardest part of the job begins after the call is over.
There was laughter, friendship, purpose, heartbreak, and loss. There were moments that made me proud to wear the badge and others that changed me in ways I didn't understand until years later. Some memories faded. Others followed me long after the uniform came off.
Eventually, I found another way to tell those stories.
Writing gave me a place to explore the human side of the badge—the parts that don't fit neatly into a police report. Those experiences became the inspiration for my debut novel, Badges, Boots & Mixed Tea, a work of fiction shaped by real emotions, real moments, and a perspective earned from having once stood on the other side of the radio.

I don't write because every story has a perfect ending. I write because even after loss, trauma, and the moments that change us, there can still be a reason to keep going.

Meet Bleu
Loyal, intuitive, and always nearby, Bleu has a way of knowing what I need before I do.
She isn't a character I created or a partner who ever wore a badge. She's simply Bleu—my sable German Shepherd, my constant companion, and the quiet presence beside me through both ordinary days and difficult ones.
There is something special about the way she seems to know when to stay close, when I need comfort, and when simply being there is enough. She reminds me that strength doesn't always arrive loudly. Sometimes it has four paws, watchful eyes, and refuses to leave your side.
